Instead of being at a level of 10% with 100 tricks. I would hope to see 100% with 10 tricks. It's way better.

Hello people, I rarely appear on the blog :)

Ok, first and foremost, I would like to congratulate those juniors/newcomers who have passed the test. Having the courage to turn up for the test, showing that you people have the passion for magic, it's a great thing(:

Well, I did a update on the member namelist, for juniors/newcomers who are eager to know if you have passed the test, either check with the updates here, or wait for the email that will be sent to you by Dr Loke (most probably).

Next is, there will still be another test, for those who cannot make it yesterday, or consider a re-test to those who have fail and wish to re-try. Date is not confirmed yet, but I will update it in the announcement board once it is confirmed.

This video is produced by me when I was only in year 2, very little knowledge on magic stuff, but with the help of everyone, we manage to do something out :)

Note : The first colour change is called Erdnase, not Ernest (common spelling mistake). I had that mistake too, so take note! Of what different things are named and spelled k ! :)

Next is my personal riffle pass, which I practice for 3 weeks only .. Er, not that good, but, yeah.. Some idea there . :)

Well, this is the one that I did yesterday, so you can see the different. Upon starting to learn, and upon mastering it. So guys, PLEASE, PLEASE, be VERY, VERY PATIENT with what you learn!

Do not, DO NOT, give up just because you think you did not do well! Don't give up because something is difficult k! Like the usual saying goes, when the going gets tough, the tough gets going!

Next video is about flourishing. Card flourishes.
Basically Card flourishing is the art of manipulating card playing. Well everyone know magic, not everyone know flourishes. Card flourishing takes a very long time to master and really need practices. It's not something as easy as ABC.
This video is about some of the really seniors, of my era (LOL), with my friends, when I was only in year 1.

Next off, is a video of Dylan. Showing you guys how awesome flourish can be! Practice, Practice, Practice, and you'll achieve crazy hands! WOOO~

Magic Test - Tips, Secrets and Thoughts.

And just for those that cared, the Magic IG's test will be taking place on this coming Wednesday. As the same as previous years, you're required to show the judge panel a trick (prepare at least 2), and also to demonstrate

(1) Overhand shuffles (Top to bottom + bottom to top)
(2) Riffle shuffle
(3) One handed cut (aka Charlier cut)
(4) Tenkai palming (i.e. hiding your card in your hand while pretend to throw away your card)

Hmmm sounds easy to me. LOL. Anyways if you're looking for short-cuts into passing the test such as bribing the judges, then possibly Magic just ain't the right IG for you. It's all about the practice and improvement of the craft from within. Really.

You might have heard of "Self-working tricks", but for me, I think that technically, there's no such thing as a self working trick. There's always something for you to do and to take notice of within a trick. And never to forget, the overall presentation on your trick is crucial as well. No point showing the most visual trick without setting a reason on your motivation to change or to transpose it into something else. A simple patter can just make do, like "Let me try something with the 6 of Hearts, with just a light touch, it changes into the King of Spades". Sure it fights better than what I'm seeing from the new magicians, which patters around "See?", or "Watch" "I'm gonna fool the crap out of you with this".

Personality, Showmanship, and Confidence is what the judge panels would be looking out for. Much as a basis for an entertainer.

So for the tips and secrets..Two words - Ask and Practice. If in doubt do ask. No point spending 20 hours on a sleight which you've no clue on how the technical aspects are. For that I meant the overall package on how the deck/hands should look while executing the sleight. Angle management comes into play very often. Sleights like Tenkai Palms do make use of your skills to manage your angles. Do remember that whatever the audience sees is what they perceives. A slight flash of a forbidden angle will just give the trick away. So do ask when in doubt, and check with your close magician friends on stuffs like angles etc. Use a mirror as much as possible. You shall be your own judge. Ask yourself that can you fool yourself first before you fool the others?

Practice is possibly the most important thing that is, and it applies to not just magic itself. It is required everywhere. Practice makes perfect. Do keep that in mind. It's ok not getting the desired result on the first day. As much as I was practicing card flourishes such as Kryptonite, guess how long I took to learn it? Not days, not weeks, but months of constant hard-work. From building memorized thoughts into muscle memory, I can say that I'm a slow learner, but never as a quitter. Always try and attempt. Some might give the reason on their hand-size, which probably for some, will say it's their reason for not attempting moves and sleights. For me, I don't have overly sized hands. Often people will complain that their hand size are rather small, but after comparing it to mine, 7 out of 10 will have bigger palms than mine. It's really about the practice and the dedication.

Hello there people, after a long break from our last post, I guess its time to update this dying blog a little bit. Yesterday we attended RP 2009 GRADUATION DINNER and it was a very fruitful experience for all of us. Both Norvin and Wilfred performed on stage on that day and all I can say is that they did best:)

Besides Magic IG, social dancers and some bands performed during the event too. Although we thought that the event wasn't really organized well enough but the service and food there is very good. SOrrry, none of the food was taken in those pictures because we were too busy eating:P

Another thing is that both norvin and wilfred's performance wasnt really taken down because the camera was out of battery. However, some of the footage and street performances were taken down which I might upload here after I finish the editing.

Let the pictures do the talking now and if you think they are offensive to you please drop me an email and complain to me, don't cry yourself to sleep that night:)

So I guessed that almost you guys have at least watched and know some of the materials featured in Dan & Dave's Trilogy such as Pandora, Collectors, Deja Vu and also Leno Cut (just to name a few)..And coming up soon, the Buck Brothers are going to add another new collection to their already epic and awesome Trilogy with "andthensome"..

Dan & Dave's moves just simply looks smooth, clean and totally awesome..Can't wait till it's being released in February..

Alright..Being an unique IG (As always),compared to other IGs, sad to say that ours does not have any holiday trainings (No reason ask you comeback Run and Flourish at the same time wad..hahas )..

But Wait!

We sure have planned some "outings" together as to take time off to practice, learn and also bond with one another..So my plans for the holidays are:

1. Sentosa Outing

2. Video Taking Session - Flourishing/ XCM/ Color Changes Etc

3. Magic Day @ The Arena (Details in the picture)

Just leave a message off the tagboard as to give suggestions, and also when you're available..Then I'll plan more for the events..Everyone is invited, regardless what year you're currently in..

This is one of the projects of 2009 that I've been waiting to get my hands on..

True Astonishments By Paul Harris..It's basically a 9 DVDs with tons of tricks and ideas within it..If you don't know who the heck is Paul Harris, you're not actually a good magician.

Paul Harris is currently one of the most creative magicians in the world. His magic and philosophy have been an inspiration to generations of magicians. Doug Henning, David Copperfield, Criss Angel, David Blaine, and many others have sought out Paul's expertise and have performed many of his original pieces of magic on their national and international television shows. Stuffs like Reset, Flow (part of his idea), and Riot (also part of his idea due to the invention of a certain gimmick) are just some of all his great ideas.

Volunteer Magicians sought for needy Children

We have also received a request to do perform as well as possibly teaching magic tricks to some abused and neglected children on 1st February.

The details of this event:

I am a student representative from Tritouch ConneXion, a community service based CCA in SMU. Tritouch ConneXion aims to provide SMU students with the platform to exhibit their creativity in the planning of their own personalized community service programs, thereby allowing them to serve the community as active contributors rather than mere passive participants. At the same time, we hope these opportunities will provide avenues for our members to develop their personal character, leadership and skills.

As part our CCA curriculum, we are working with the Singapore Children’s Society where our members make visits to the Sunbeam Place on a weekly basis to bond with the children. Gazetted as a place of safety for abused and neglected children in need of protection, Sunbeam Place provides a caring and loving environment for children aged between 2 to 16 years old. A variety of activities such

as storybook reading, boardgames and science experiments to interest the children have been carried out so far. This time round, we are looking at arranging even more interesting and beneficial programs for these children such as magic tricks, balloon sculpting etc.

As such, on behalf of Tritouch, I would like to invite Magic IG to come join us to make the day meaningful by performing and teaching the children some simple magic tricks.

Magicians for Chingay 2009

We have received a request to do roving magic tricks for Chingay 2009 on 30th and 31st January.
You will be given T-shirts, certificate and $10 per day if you wish to help out on this.

Below is the details of the email:

I am Glen Peh, from Alpha Plus Magic. We are appointed by the Chingay 2009 committee to perform pre parade street magic performance and balloon sculpturing for the VIP seats on 30th January (6pm to 7pm) and 31st January 2009 (6.30pm - 7.30pm). We are expected to supply about 50 magicians and I heard from Kun Rong that Republic Polytechnic has Magic Interest Group and that the pupils may be interested to be volunteers for this national event.

Each magician will be given:

(1) 1 Chingay 2009 t-shirt (Souvenir)

(2) 1 Alpha Plus Magic (Black) t-shirt for performance

(3) Certificate of participation (and a letter to be awarded 10 CIP hours / CE points if applicable)

(4) $10 per day for materials purchase (Total $20 for 2 days)

I wonder if you would like your students to take part in this event. I will be able to supply you with more information if needed.

For those of you who did not pass the Magic IG test last time or who have not taken the test, we will be conducting another test again this coming Monday (7^th July) at 5 pm. The test venue will be the classroom W14A and W14B. If you still want to join magic IG, kindly prepare your tricks and basic card handling and come to this test.

our station was located at the back

Comedy Magic Show on 29th June

There will be a comedy magic show put up by one of Singapore’s top comedian magician Kiki Tay. The performance will be held at Raffles Hotel (Jubilee Hall) on 29^th June (3 pm and 8 pm show). Magic Performance Bazaar on 26th and 27th June

Magic IG will be participating in the Buzzer Bazaar at South Agora on 26^th and 27^th June (12 – 2 pm and 4 – 6 pm) where we will not only be doing street magic performance, but we will also be setting up a stall selling tricks and props.
If you are interested to participate in this event, kindly email Dr Loke as soon as possible (stating which of the 4 time slots you are able to help out – you are welcome to help out in as many time slots as you wish). We are not looking for many helpers so it will be on a first come first serve basis.

There will be a show called "Magicbox" to be shown at Esplanade theatre from 12th to 20th July 2008. This is a magic show performed in the form of a musical story. The price of the tickets range from $28 to $128 but you can get 15% discount if you buy the tickets before 31st May through Sistic.

MAGIC TEST

HELLO TO THE YEAR ONES
take note
as you guys know
there will be a TEST TOMORROW
for those who's surname starting from 'A' to 'O' (inclusive)
venue - W14P && W14N
time - 5.30pm
&& PLEASE BE PUNCTUAL!

these are the requirements for the test
(1) Overhand Shuffle
(2) Top to bottom shuffle
(3) Bottom to top shuffle
(4) Riffle shuffle
(5) One-handed cut
(6) Simple force (i.e. forcing a card using for e.g. riffle force, cut force, etc)
(7) Tenkie palming (the one with pretending to throw card away while secretly hide your card using your thumb to clip)
(8) 2 or more tricks of your own

A little tip for those who are going to perform again. Try not to do tricks that are common like cards. The judge might be tired of card tricks.
